West Africa

The hibiscus flower originates from a region in West Africa called Senegambia, which is modern-day Senegal, Gambia, and parts of Mali, Guinea and Guinea Bissau. Shortly after, hibiscus was and still is grown in the whole of West Africa.

Hibiscus (as well as kola nuts) were commonly used to make a beverage called Bissap for casual, ceremonial and medicinal reasons.

This centuries old flower made its way to the Americas due to Transatlantic Slave Trade and was cultivated in many Caribbean, Central American and South American countries. In historical text, some say that the enslaved African women would hide crops in their hair by braiding prior to being captured.

similar beverages like Bissap can be found in countries like Jamaica and other Caribbean islands called Sorrel, Chicha de Saril in Panama, Rose Kayenn in Haiti, and Agua de Jamaica in Mexico.
Many crops that are grown and eaten abundantlyin The Americas come from our motherland.

HIBISCUS IN AMERICA

In the American South, although the hibiscus flower could not be cultivated, a similar beverage was created to commemorate their true roots, true identity and perseverance called Red Drink used with berries and cherries. In fact, when researched through the history behind hibiscus in The Americas and the similarities of Bissap, they were re-created by the enslaved Africans in these countries as a way to remember where they come from and their ancestral African roots. Today hibiscus is having its moment in the world with discoveries of how amazing it is for our bodies but hardly any history of its true origin, and we are here to shine its light and bear its fruit for the masses.
