Classic Ghanaian Sobolo
Sobolo is the drink of Ghanaian gatherings and hot afternoons: tart hibiscus, warm spice, sweet pineapple and a kick of ginger. Our blend takes care of the hibiscus and spices, so you just add the pineapple, ginger and, if you like it the traditional way, a little chili.
Ingredients
- 4 cups filtered water
- 1 cup Mampro Foods Spiced Hibiscus Drink Blend
- 1/4 cup dried chilies (optional)
- 1 tablespoon chopped fresh ginger
- 6 cloves
- The rinds of 1 whole pineapple
- Juice of 1 pineapple, or the chunks of 1 pineapple
- Organic cane sugar, organic panela or organic piloncillo to taste (optional)
Steps
- Bring the 4 cups of water to a boil in a pot or Dutch oven on high heat.
- Once the water is boiling, add the 1 cup of Spiced Hibiscus Drink Blend and lower the heat a bit.
- Add the pineapple rinds, the pineapple juice or chunks, cloves and the chopped ginger. Stir well on low heat to preserve the nutrients of the pineapple.
- If you want your sobolo spicy, the traditional way, add the dried chilies. For a milder sobolo, remove the seeds first.
- For more sweetness, add organic cane sugar to taste. We advise adding no more than 3 cups.
- Once everything is dissolved, strain it all into a bowl or pitcher.
- Voilà! Serve in your cup over ice and enjoy.
Tips
- Store it covered in the fridge and serve it ice cold.
- Freeze some in ice cube trays so your drink never gets watery.
